Summary/Abstract: Considered one of the founders of the sociology of art field, Pierre Francastel studied art as a social fact and as a specific type of communication and transformation of the world, irreducible to another. Refusing the traditional debates regarding art, those which seeked its significance beyond its sensitive appearance, but also the previously used methodology in the field of the sociology of art, Francastel establishes a creative reading method of plastic imagery, sustains a relative autonomy of the plastic language and insists upon the fact that works of art must be treated like objects of civilization.
