Summary/Abstract: Dialect and folklore function on the basis of oral tradition as an intergenerational transmission. While the “historical” continuity in dialects is limited to three generations (I – parents – grand-parents), elements that testify to their very long tradition can be found in the texts of folklore (folksong). This is especially visible when confronting the original works of different nations (a Slavicfolk song is included here). A characteristic feature of the language of folk song is also the limitation – in relation to dialects – of the lexical and semantic structure. An analysis of texts of folk songs of various Slavic nations shows the functioning in its structureof elements characteristic also of the works attributed to Homer – these are the so-called permanentepithets taking the form of specific poetic formulas in oral works.
