Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the quantity and quality features of stressed and unstressed low vowel phonemes [w] and [e'] in Standard Lithuanian. The article investigates Lithuanian trisyllabic words. Such a choice has been made because of the need to analy se the vowels in different positions, i e. the stressed, pre-accented, and post-accented ones. The spectra and duration of pre-accented and post-accented [«], [e'] have been compared with the spectra of the corresponding stressed vowel. The results of the investigations are the following: the unstressed vowels [a-], [e'] in Standard Lithuanian are both qualitatively and quantitatively reduced. The acoustic characteristics of unstressed vowels [«•], [e'] are less marked than those of the stressed ones: compact unstressed vowels [w], [em] are less compact and are more diffuse (more close) than the corresponding stressed ones. The quantity and the quality of the vowels is determined both by stress and by their position in a word with respect to stress: second and first pre-accented variants exhibit greatest shortening. It should be pointed out that the quantitative and qualitative reduction of post-accented allophones [a*], [e-] is less marked.
