The Myth of the Founding of Amalfi. A translation and commentary of excerpts from the Amalfi Chronicle

Summary/Abstract: Amalfi’s relations with Constantinople did not only include economic issues, but also military, religious and cultural ones. The Amalfitan Chronicle begins with a legendary account of the city’s early history. Translating and commenting on the myth of Amalfi origins is of paramount importance in understanding the basis of the local historical narrative. Legend conveys that the city was founded by Roman patricians who fell victim to a storm near Ragusa while traveling to the Bosphorus. The geographic route of the Amalfitans in the legend may contain some true aspects. The story itself is based on the archetype of the „happy disaster” and alludes to the wanderings of Aeneas. The narrative presented raises many questions, including what place in Italy did the founders of the new city come from? Were they residents of Rome? The key issue is the founding date of Amalfi. The myth of Amalfi’s rise helped to confirm the city’s inhabitants’ right to belong to the imperial community.
