Summary/Abstract: During its existence, the medieval Church of St. Michael in Cluj has been repaired several times. The church’s history of the 19th century is generally associated with the construction of a new tower (1836-1862) and the demolition of the buildings around the church, and the reorganisation of the main square. Most of the research has focused on these two major interventions. Although, it took place in the surrounding, it also had an impact on the church itself and vice versa. In addition, further repairs were made on the church between 1867-1869. Regarding these works, several questions arise: were the medieval walls preserved in their original form; what restoration efforts were carried out in parallel with the construction of the new tower; what were the determinants behind the decisions, and who were the experts? The aim of the article is to map the repairs through field- and archival research and to answer the questions related to the extent of these works. The research was largely motivated by the lack of 19th century building history of the church. From 2018 preservation work has been ongoing on the parish church, and this gave the opportunity to investigate closely the details.
