Summary/Abstract: Keeping in mind the reality of geostrategic, political, and economic interests and relationships and cherishing an open yet critical pro-European position, the author once again poses the question of responsibility for the survival and future of the Balkans. He considers this problem in the light of the crisis of European values and institutions, the omnipresent discourse practice of “Balkanism” and the political practice of “Balkanization”, warns of the political abuse of the Balkans and of pushing Balkan countries into new conflicts based on external interests, and pleads for raising cultural and political self-consciousness in the Balkans and a corresponding intellectual dialogue and engagement.
