Summary/Abstract: Affection is the reality of intimate associations; associations between people who love and care for each other. Sometimes the affection disappears or is alienated. In a society fundamentally based on individualism, such as North American society, should falling in and out of love be associated with the possibility of alienation of affection? And should that be an evil with consequences administered by the courts? Should the gender or age of the parties involved be taken into consideration? This article advances these questions. It incorporates a brief literary analysis of two great novels of quasi urban morals, then through a historical analysis of the legal protection of this particular type of interference with one's emotions, propels the discussion on the value of legal protection. The novels are The Great Gatsby and Mysteries of Pittsburgh, which resonate with my existence in Manhattan and my more recent living and working arrangements in Pittsburgh.
