Changes in the Roma population according to the Population and Housing Censuses of 2001, 2011 and 2021

Summary/Abstract: The text addresses changes in the Roma population in the Czech Republic. The authors analyse data obtained from the 2001, 2011 and 2021 Population and Housing censuses. They compare selected data on the Roma population and describe the situation in the Roma population as captured by these censuses in terms of selected socio-demographic variables and territorial distribution. The general population data from the censuses served as the frame of reference for these statistics. The findings show that there are significant differences between the Roma population (identified based on nationality and/or mother tongue) and the general population. While the Roma population is moving closer to the general population over time, it remains significantly younger than the general population, it contains a higher proportion of men than women, it is characterised by lower educational levels, the proportion of people living in a marriage relationships is declining, and the proportion of single persons is increasing, which has led to a significant decline in the average number of live births per woman over 15 years of age. Roma in the Czech Republic live predominantly in urban areas, and the largest shares of the Roma population live in the Moravian-Silesian and Ústí nad Labem regions.
