Summary/Abstract: The main goal of this paper is to present a digest of various theoretical views on the importance of illustrations in foreign language teaching, as well as to put forth concrete suggestions for their successful integration into the general context of language learning. Given the difficulties that can be caused by the use of one illustration or another in foreign language teaching, it is necessary to observe some basic criteria for their selection, so as to facilitate and not impede foreign language acquisition. In this sense, in order for the integration of a given illustration as a didactic tool in learning to be as effective as possible, it must be tailored especially to the function it will perform for the learner, as well as to their particular cognitive and life experience.
