Summary/Abstract: The text focuses on ethnomusicological fieldwork related to Bulgaria, which is accepted as a basic ethnomusicological method of data collection and a defining activity in the endeavors of ethnomusicologists. Different approaches and models for fieldwork, applied and developed in the history of Bulgarian ethnomusicology, are presented: music-centric (collectible, analytical), motivated by the understanding that musical-folkloric units created as a result of a musical practice are preserved when they are transformed into fixed texts; ethnographic (interviewing, dialogic, descriptive, analytical), motivated by the intention to present and explain music as part of culture; anthropological (intersubjective, self-reflexive, interpretive), motivated by attempts to transform and prefigure the self in the process of shared musical, verbal, or other behavior leading to an understanding of one’s own or another culture.
