“The common world” in Norwid’s perspective

Summary/Abstract: The studies comprising Agnieszka Ziołowicz’s fourth book entitled We wspólnym świecie [In The Common World] emerged from her earlier research on 19th-century Polish dramaturgy, but at the same time went beyond their horizon – both in terms of problems and methodology. Firstly, in her book the author reconstructs Norwid’s understanding of the axiological crisis leading to the destruction of the foundations of the common world; she refers to Norwid’s writings without assuming any genological constraints, invoking also the broad philosophical context. Secondly, she analyses the artist’s views and ideas, which he points to as means of preventing further disintegration of the social community. This second aspect determines the Christian and Renaissance sources of ethics (from the Pythagoreans to Christian ethics), Norwid’s project of moral education based on the tradition of spiritual exercises, and the art of the living word in Norwid’s reflection and practice.
