“Does It Actually Make Any Sense?” Contemporary (Un)Religious Experiences of the Young Generation

Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of survey research conducted in recent years on the religiousness of Poles, with particular emphasis on young people, as this social group is currently attracting the attention of both media and scientific discourses, as well as within the Church, due to the very noticeable process of abandoning religious practices and declarations of faith. The data is then placed in the context of contemporary socio-cultural changes, characterized by the individualization of life, distance from collective identifications, and the dynamic process of secularization. The picture outlined with the help of quantitative data is complemented by examples of autobiographical narratives of young people relating to the issue of contemporary experiencing of one’s faith, and especially spirituality. The final part of the article comments on the sources of current changes in religiosity and outlines potential possible scenarios for their development.
