Summary/Abstract: The article describes the organization, transformations and functioning of a unique military territorial administration entity, i.e. the Command of the Fortified Area “Wilno” (Vilnius), focusing especially on its infrastructure – the complexes of barracks, warehouses, communication routes and fortifications. In 1923 fortification works were initiated around Wilno, the largest Polish garrison, aiming at making the city capable of all-round defence for several weeks. For financial and organizational reasons these works have never been finished and their results were quite modest – only 4 combat bunkers and not nearly 100 ammunition warehouses were built. These objects were not destined to be tested in combat – the fortress units, specially formed in Wilno, were used in 1939 on other sectors of the front. However, a considerable part of the military buildings in Wilno has survived until today and consitutes a unique legacy of the pioneer period of military engineering of the Second Polish Republic.
