Summary/Abstract: In this article, the methodologies of linguistic worldview research and of literary semantics research are used to reconstruct the portrayals of sleeping and dreaming in the general variety of Polish and in the work of the contemporary poet Julia Hartwig. A comparison of those portrayals shows that: 1) The poetic portrayal of sleeping is entrenched in general Polish and in conceptual schemata to a greater extent than is the poetic portrayal of dreaming. Its creative aspect is manifested above all through the poetic use of language; 2) Typical features of the poetic portrayal of dreaming include an elaborate characterization of the one who dreams and the idea of the dreamer being dominated by the dream; 3) The interaction between dreaming and memory, present in Hartwig’s poetry, is absent from the general Polish linguistic worldview; 4) In Hartwig’s poetry, the range of axiological valuation is broader than in general Polish: dreaming is endowed with ambivalent ethical values and ameliorative hedonistic values, while sleaping is endowed with ameliorative cognitive values.
