Considerations about the Death of Ioan Petru Culianu

Summary/Abstract: The assassination of Professor Ioan Petru Culianu on May 21st, 1991 was followed by various reactions and discourses in the media. The present paper aims to gather together most of the suppositions connected to this murder and tries to rise some new questions in order to help further investigations. An important stress falls however on the examination of the discourses recorded by the documentary entitled O crimă la Chicago (Murder in Chicago), made by Lucia Hossu-Longin. This television documentary has the merit of presenting testimonies of persons in key positions referring to the Culianu case in America (Richard Rosengarten – Dean at the Divinity School, Ted Anton – Professor at DePaul University in Chicago, Rudolph E. Nimocks Sr. – Chief of the Police and Security Services of the Chicago University, Lt. Thomas Argenbright – Representative of the Chicago Police Dept.), as well as relevant testimonies from personalities of Romania and Diaspora who knew Culianu and were involved in a way or another in the attempt of revealing the truth regarding his assasination (Dorin Tudoran, Vladimir Tismăneanu, Virgil Măgureanu, Gabriela Adameşteanu, Silviu Angelescu, Sorin Roşca Stănescu, Marius Oprea, Jean Buchiu). The paper is intended to lead to the systematization of all trails and considerations linked to the death of Ioan Petru Culianu and represent a new effort to illuminate this still open case.
