Summary/Abstract: The coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated the importance of the fungibility of specific public officials. At the constitutional level, the rules on the substitution of public officials are rarely included in our Constitution. This article analyses the regulation and the current practice of the substitute exercise of the office of the President of the Republic. It notes the historical arrangements and interprets the current rules. Particular attention is paid to two cases from 2021, when senators considered activating the substitute exercise of the functions of the President of the Republic, Miloš Zeman.
