Summary/Abstract: The present research focuses on the analysis of a cluster of factors (psychological, social, religious) that contributed to the suicide of Anna Karenina, a monumental female figure in universal literature, trapped in a mundane marriage from which she ultimately seeks to escape. In her pursuit of inner fulfillment, Karenina chooses eroticism at the expense of motherhood, embarking on an extramarital relationship that culminates in her suicide. Banished from good society and isolated from the outside world, the woman constructs her entire existence around the man for whom she abandoned her family and whom she obsessively desires. Alongside the portrayal of her obsessive struggles, the pre-suicidal journey of the heroine provides valuable insights into the condition, status, and role of women in nineteenth-century Russian society, essentially serving as an exploration of the prevailing mentality of the time. Anna Karenina's suicide emerges as a consequence of her inability to reconcile the values imposed by conservative Russian society with her own desires. Love and the patriarchal community invariably become the coordinates that lead to the heroine's self-destruction in Tolstoy's narrative, propelling her towards the ultimate act.
