Summary/Abstract: The present research aims at an analysis of female characters in universal literature who have exhibited self-destructive predispositions, from antiquity to modern times, in chronological order, analyzing the social as well as religious mentalities of each period researched, consequently anchoring the suicidal act in the context of the history of mentalities. In addition to presenting theories on the birth of the phenomenon in literature, complemented by premises and causes, the article also seeks to capture the way in which the great writers of the times interposed suicide and unhappiness as global themes of their writings.
