“Shmontses”: the story of a single loanword

Summary/Abstract: In her article, Anna Krasowska discusses the process of adaptation and semantic development of theJewish loanword shmontse in the Polish language of the 20th and 21st century. The semantic adaptation of thisword depends not only on the transfer of Yiddish meanings into Polish, but also on different changes, involvingthe narrowing and expansion of the meaning, the change of the emotional coloring, and the elimination ofmultiple meanings. These changes are caused by different intralinguistic and extralinguistic factors.
