Summary/Abstract: This article aims to present the outbreak, spread and demographic effects of the Black Death in Byzantium and the Byzantine world in the period between 1347 and 1453 AD. First part of the paper deals with the modern epidemiology of the plague. Its second part traces the main climatic preconditions for the outbreak and spread of the pandemic during the 1340’s. Special attention is paid to the social ecology of the Late Byzantine world. Based on written and archaeological evidence the work sets forth three epidemiological scenarios which provide possible explanation how the environmental changes triggered the outbreak of the disease. In the next part of the paper is made an attempt for identification of the original plague focus where the Black Death first broke out. Also is given chronological frame of its arrival in Constantinople. Finally, the article discusses demographic effects of the pandemic and the process of depopulation.
