Summary/Abstract: The present article aims at reviewing the complex medical response to the Black Death in Byzantium in the period between 1347 and 1453. In search of a relatively detailed and balanced presentation, the text traces the state and functioning of the network of Byzantine hospitals after 1261. Special attention is paid to the specific medical knowledge and various practices for the treatment of plague as reflected in the so-called Hospital manuals (iatrosophia). Finally, the paper discusses the public image of the Byzantine physicians in the course of disease.
