Summary/Abstract: Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine may be seen as a blatant violation of the international law but also as a consequence of a double failure of deterrence: Moscow could not deter Kyiv from going ever closer to western integration and the West could not deter the Russians from using military force to change the political status quo and the borders. The incredible Ukrainian resilience and capacity to defend its national territory with foreign support in weapons and ammunitions could be a lesson for the government and population in Taiwan, as they live under the constant fear of mainland China’s possible decision to use military power for a forced reunification of the nation. On the other side, if China woult attacks Taiwan, this may force the USA to divide the weapons supplies between Ukraine and Taiwan, which will be a positive outcome for both Moscow and Beijing.
