Summary/Abstract: This article aims to provide a brief overview of the environmental and financial aspects of cryptocurrency markets and how their growth can affect the environment and society in general. The cryptocurrency mining mechanism and the environmental consequences of its growth are briefly described. The issue of global warming as a consequence of the consumption of electricity for the production of Bitcoin was discussed. It also describes the consequences that have occurred in a number of countries that have allowed a large number of cryptominers to mine bitcoins. The attitude of the European Regulation MiCA and the European Securitiesand Markets Authority ESMA regarding crypto-asset markets and their impact on the climate is discussed. In conclusion, the consequences of the increased and unlimited mining of cryptocurrencies and the need to take adequate measures for the ecological orientation of production are briefly described.
