Summary/Abstract: This article attempts to outline the history of the major planned but ultimately unrealized film adaptations of The Master and Margarita. The projects discussed cover a period of about fifty years, ranging from the late 1960s to the 1920s. The film projects described were planned mainly in Soviet (Mosfilm) and Russian (Mars Media) studios and in Hollywood studios (including Columbia and Lucasfilm), with the participation of Russian, American and European filmmakers. The article focuses largely on sketching a picture of specific design and production activities within these projects. A separate section is devoted to adaptation strategies, with a particular focus on the Klimov brothers’ screenplay.
