The Use of Visual Materials in the Teaching of the Prophet's Life: An Example of Islamic Miniature Art

Summary/Abstract: There is an significant relationship betwen the effective teaching of the Prophet’s life and the correct understanding of the religion of Islam. In this context how the Prophet is taught is as important as what is taught. The aim of this research is to investigate the possibility of using Islamic miniature art in the teaching of the life of the Prophet. The data of the study were collected through document review. First of all, Primary and Secondary Education Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge course curricula were examined. The achievements related to the teaching of the Prophet's Life have been identified and listed. Then, visual materials and works related to miniature were valuated. As a result of these examinations, the depictions of Prophet in the third volume of Siyar-i Nabî (Life of the Prophet) in the Spencer Collection at the New York Public Library were included in the research. It has been determined that the nine miniatures in the third volume of Siyer-i Nebî can be associated with some of the achievements in the Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge course curriculum. It has been determined that seven achievements (4.4.5.; 6.4.1.; 6.4.2.; 6.4.3.; 8.4.1.; 10.2.4.; 11.2.2.) can be correlated. It is understood that the subjects of the associated miniatures are listed as 'Mi‘râj', 'Death of Abu Talib', ‘The Tribal Leader Henad’s Conversion to Islam’, 'Invitation to Islam', Pledge of al-'Aqaba', 'Hijra', 'Construction of al-Masjid al-Nabawi', 'Examplary Companion' and 'Conversations with Non-Muslims'. W,th,n the framework of the associations obtained, it is understood that the miniature can be used in the teaching of the life of the Prophet in the line with achievement of the Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge course within the framework of the obtained associations, It is understood that the miniature can be used in the teaching of the life of the Prophet. It is expected that our study will give content developers a positive attitude about the use of miniatures as visual materials in religious teaching. It is also hoped that this research will provide teachers with knowledge and awareness in the educational use of visual materials and especially miniatures in religious education. Depending on the results, it is expected that the study will contribute to curricula, the textbooks and electronic contents. Based on the results reached in the study, it is recommended to examine the possibility of using other miniatures in Siyar-i Nabî or in works about the Prophet in terms of religious education with similar or more comprehensive studies.
