Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to analyse the short story Irina’s Hat by Chinese writer Tie Ning, through focusing on the strength of the visual images and their power of suggesting, indirectly, various thoughts which the readers may get as a result of the dialogue with the text, in a reader-response approach manner. The power of the visual element in this Chinese short story is used as an equivalent of the figurative language in Western short stories. The visual element is not unrelated to psychological issues and the inner world of the characters. The visual elements are so powerful that they are, just like the language of gestures, able to hint towards various messages. The communication style of Western and Asian cultures will also be related to either primacy of the visual or of the figurative language.
