The Court of First Instance of the European Communities

Summary/Abstract: The establishment of the Court of First Instance in 1989 was a major step towards the development of the judicial system of the EC. The aim of this article is to give an account of the new court and especially of its system of appeals to the Court of Justice of the EC. In order to reveal the background, legal nature, jurisdiction, procedure, etc. of the Court of First Instance, the following ques-tions are examined: 1) establishment of the Court of First Instance; 2) its composition and organizational structured) development of its jurisdiction; 4) procedure before it; 5) interaction between the Court of First Instance and the European Court of Justice (mistakes, lack of jurisdiction, connected issues and appeals); 6) amendments in the jurisdiction of the Court of First Instance according to the Treaty of Nice.
