Summary/Abstract: The article presents the possibilities of practical use of researches in the field of genetic genealogy. They are based on data obtained as part of the Silesia DNA project. Genetic Genealogy is a young scientific discipline that has not yet been subject to many publications in Polish. For this reason, the text contains a short overview of the basic concepts of this field of science, such as the haplogroup, haplotype, single nucleotide polymorphism, microsatellite polymorphism, as well as the types of DNA used for research (YDNA, mtDNA, atDNA). Furthermore, the authors of the study also discuss institutional and non-institutional projects. Meanwhile, the later part of the article presents the assumptions and methodology of the Silesia DNA Project, as well as the preliminary interpretation of the obtained results. The research activities focus, among others, on the collection and analysis of DNA samples of people whose ancestors were born in Silesia before the outbreak of World War II. The article presents a study of the spatial distribution of the Y chromosome in the studied area based on 166 samples. It provides knowledge on the proportion of haplogroups in the discussed area in historical times compared to other European regions. In addition, two detailed analyzes of local families were conducted (Jureczko, Mitrenga). They show how the history of a family from times for which written sources has not been preserved can be recreated on the basis of genetic research.
