Review of the Exhibition: “The Year 1922 from the Perspective of Katowice. A Chance That Was Taken?”

Summary/Abstract: The review concerns the exhibition entitled “The Year 1922 from the Per¬spective of Katowice. A Chance That Was Taken?”, which was hosted by the Museum of the History of Katowice between July 15 and November 27, 2022. Its curators were Joanna Tofilska, Joanna Kałuska and Sławomir Stanowski. Jolanta Barnaś was responsible for the exhibition arrangement, whereas Aleksander Niesyto - for editing the texts. The aim of the exhi¬bition was to remind the events that took place exactly 100 years ago in Katowice. However, the focus was not only on the events. There was also made an attempt to characterize how they influenced the development of the city and the whole region. The review consists of two parts. The first of them summarizes the information contained in the exhibition halls and discusses the presented exhibits. Meanwhile, the second part assesses the exhibition in terms of the technical and content-related solutions used. Attention was drawn to minor defects, such as placing some boards and exhibits too high for the average visitor’s eye, too strong lighting of two boards or difficulties in accessing one of the parts of the exhibition lo¬cated in a separate room. Furthermore, doubts were expressed as to the adequacy of the subtitle of the exhibition, because the lack of comparative data could make it impossible to answer the question asked therein. In addition, the quality of the prepared texts, the selection of exhibits, as well as the general aesthetics of the exhibition were positively assessed. The ex¬hibition was prepared in an objective manner, discussing the subject thor¬oughly. At the same time, the prepared texts were accessible to all visitors.
