Summary/Abstract: This article analysed the production of passenger rolling stock in Poland after 1989 in the segment of diesel and electric multiple units. The aim of the article was to answer three main research questions: (1) How did the Polish market of manufacturers develop this stock, and how many units were produced in Poland after 1989? (2) What was its technical evolution, and which comparative indicators should be used in the analysis? (3) Is the production focused on the domestic or export market, and what are the competitive advantages of our rolling stock manufacturers? This research covers the period from 1989 - 2022 and was realized using desk research of existing literature, including specialist databases and data from rolling stock companies. In the analysed period, Poland produced for domestic train operators a total of 254 diesel, 763 electric multiple units, and 13 double-decker trains operated in the push-pull system. Our research has shown that after the economic crisis in the 1990s, and thanks to the local authorities assuming control of regional railways - and the support of EU funds - it was possible to recreate the market of passenger rolling stock manufacturers of electric and diesel multiple units. The competitive position of Polish companies in relation to international concerns is low. The manufacturers of passenger rolling stock in Poland were able to fully meet the needs of the domestic market. Moreover, their competitive advantage in the foreign markets is mainly price-related and concerns the segment of diesel multiple units.
