Summary/Abstract: This article is an attempt to analyse the understanding of Yves M.-J. Congar (1904–1995), about the catholicity of the church. The manner in which we understand the reality of the Church and its principles of unity determines the way we do understand also the catholicity. The French theologian takes into consideration the unity of the church from three perspectives: Ecclesia de Trinitate, Ecclesia in Christo, Ecclesia ab hominibus. The catholicity of the church is to be conceived as the dynamic universality of the unity, because the church, in order to be one and because it cannot be but one, has to bring her life up to the whole humanity. A correct understanding of the relationship between catholicity and unity will determine directly the significance of the mission of the Church.
