Aspects of a Value-based Understanding of Culture

Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the issues pertaining to the value-based understanding of the term ‘culture’ in the German language circle. On the basis of the understanding of culture as a cultivation activity (colere), the evolution of the meaning is shown, consisting in a change in the object of cultivation (from external cultivation to internal cultivation concerning individuals, then nations). Attention is drawn to the link between the term ‘culture’ and the term ‘education’ (Bildung), furthermore the moment of change in the meaning of the word ‘culture’ from active to passive is highlighted. In this context, one can see the trend towards the spread of an objective understanding of culture, which will gradually supersede culture understood subjectively.
