Summary/Abstract: In the modern and recent philosophical discourse common sense cognition is often confused with naive cognition that interferes in reflections about the world. In “scientific” philosophy there is a policy of cutting off from such a type of cognition, while to philosophize means to cognize critically. Despite of all attempts to eliminate common sense cognition from philosophy it was approached by Th. Reid, G. E. Moore, or neo-scholastic thinkers. The issue of common sense cognition also appears in the philosophical reflection of M. A. Krąpiec. This article introduces Krąpiec’s understanding of common sense cognition, and points at its functions in realistic philosophy. It determines what common sense cognition is, what cognitive spheres it does include, what functions in philosophy it does carry out, and what its aim is. Undertaken considerations seem to be important since they show that the rejection of criticism at the beginning of cognition leads back to realism in philosophy.
