Summary/Abstract: The main aim in writing of this article is to make precisely intelligible the chief cause of the widespread disappearance of Catholic colleges and universities from the contemporary West. By “widespread disappearance” of such colleges and universities, the author not referring to a contemporary, widespread closing of Catholic institutions of higher learning. The institutions to which he refers tend to be economically-flourishing, household names with often large student enrollments. He emphasizes this point to make clear from the outset that he writes this article chiefly for a target audience most likely to benefit from it: those who recognize that, strictly speaking, most of the “big name” Catholic colleges and universities in the contemporary West are “Catholic in Name Only.”
