Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to compare the position of national and world literature in the educational practice of both the Czech and the Slovak Republics. Content standards, performance standards, educational outputs and requirements placed on secondary school graduates in both countries are the subject of comparison. The article strives to reveal quantitative and qualitative position of the world literature, with a focus on its specificity and importance, in relation to the national literature of the two small, historically related, Slavic nations, based on the inclusion of excerpts from specific authors and works of national and world literature in the mandatory (i.e. compulsory for all pupils) pedagogical documentation of their secondary education with school-leaving examination.
