The Island as Landscape and Landschaft: Phenomenolo- gical Attempts at Interpreting the Landscape in The Ban- shees of Inisherin

Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt to analyse the film The Banshees of Inisherin (2022), directed by Martin McDonagh, from the perspective of landscape phenomenology. The author pro- poses to read the meanings of the film by identifying the protagonists’ two different ways of inhabiting the island. The figure of Pádraic is associated with the German con- cept of Landschaft, which she defines as the “landscape of identity.” The English concept of landscape, associated with “the sublime,” is identified with Colm’s way of living.
