Summary/Abstract: The article gives an overview of the first years of existence of the Regional Library and Museum founded in Eastern Rumelia. It reaffirms the contibutions its founders Joakim Gruev and Petko Karavelov made to developing and strengthening the role of the oldest cultural institute in Southern Bulgaria. In 2019 the National Library in Plovdiv celebrates its 140 th anniversary.
