Summary/Abstract: The European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms came into force on 3 September 1953. For the first time, through this Convention, establishing a whole set of human rights and freedoms in a comprehensive manner, a mechanism was introduced for filing appeals of individuals against the state for the protection of human rights, established by this Convention, in the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. The citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina along with 800 million other people were given this opportunity when Bosnia and Herzegovina became a member of the Council of Europe on 12 July 2002. Otherwise, this Convention has been directly applied in Bosnia and Herzegovina since the ratification of General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1995), and superceeds all other state law.
