Summary/Abstract: This article offers a synthesis of 400 years of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. The author emphasizes the importance of missionary territories for missionary work, taking into account Pope Francis’ Constitution Praedicate evangelium. The Pope has introduced two innovations here. The first is the merging of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples with the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization. The second is that the Pope has taken it upon himself to lead the Congregation, establishing himself as prefect. The article consists of several parts. The first shows sources of information about the structure of the universal and missionary Church, often little known in the reality of parish or diocesan life. The second describes the administrative units in the mission territories. In presenting their formation and functioning, the difficulties faced by the Catholic Church in evangelizing in many areas of the world are shown. The third part provides answers to the question: when a territory is missionary and when it is not. Finally, the achievements and influence of the Congregation on the development of the Church’s missionary work are shown holistically.
