Summary/Abstract: Population ageing is one of the most dangerous economic diseases and its consequences are obvious in production, consumption and intergenerational exchange of goods and services. The paper presents an x-ray of the demographic system in the European Union and an analysis of the impact of an ageing workforce on budgetary expenditure over the period 1991-2021 using econometric analysis. The results show that the elderly population generates different effects on allocations in the government sector given the different impact obtained by OLS linear regressions when considering the elderly population by distinct categories.
