Methods for stabilizing paper while preserving the written cultural heritage

Summary/Abstract: With long-term storage of paper documents, irreversible changes in properties and quality occur. Aging of paper is a process with a change in its chemical composition and a decrease in its mechanical strength. As the paper ages, the fibers become brittle and fragile. Some types of paper, especially those with a high wood content, are of low durability due to their high lignin content. Lignin oxidizes, changes and the paper becomes brittle and yellow. The aim of the present work is to study and apply different methods of deacedification and neutralization of acidity on paper objects.
