Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the essence of I in Edward Stachura’s prose on the example of the stories titled “Się” (“Self”). The fulfillment of the essence of human being in the Polish writer is closely related to the discovery of himself (his I), the birth of a man-nobody (according to Stachura, he is identified with a new person who does not need anything and knows everything), the need for a double and finding himself in other man. We can consider him as a kind of Absolute. Stachura uses various writer’s techniques (meetings with other characters, philosophical reasoning, the need of a friend, traveling etc.) in order to present a complete image of a person-nobody.
