Summary/Abstract: This article is devoted to the problem of knowing and using the visible signs by which border guards can register the risk behavior of potential perpetrators at the state border. It establishes, on the basis of specific empirical material, the awareness of border guards about the signs of risky behavior and their effective use in the context of their immediate activities. The conducted empirical research showed that the border police officers are only to a certain extent aware of the signs for predicting the risky behavior of potential violators of the state border. In practice, they are competent to operate with less reduced ideas about the current mental states of potential of fenders and register them, using mainly easy to diagnose signs. Border police officers are sensitive to the direct interventions of the citizens they check, but are less oriented in their more indirect interventions. Border guards are well acquainted with the typical signs of non-verbal behavior characteristic of potential offenders. However, they show a tendency to ignore diagnostic information, which is carried by the less popular nonverbal indicators.
