Summary/Abstract: This article attempts to look at national stereotypes from theoretical and empirical perspectives. First, selected interpretations of the term stereotype are subjected to critical analysis, and then the terms auto- and heterostereotype are discussed. Afterwards, the paper presents the results of a Polish-German tandem project focused on a discussion about how Poles and Germans see themselves and how it compares to the way their neighbours from beyond the Oder River perceive them.
