Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the use of the achievements of the Polish ethnolinguistic school in the study of feature films. The author believes that the model of cognitive definition, created by Jerzy Bartmiński, can be applied to the analysis of the semantic layer of film media texts. This type of semantic explication is able to encompass and organize not only linguistic data but also information transmitted by means of other semiotic systems. The author tries to prove this using the example of a cognitive definition of the cinematic conceptual category of a BADYLARZ (‘owner of a horticulture business’). The research material consists of crime films made during the Polish People’s Republic period.
