Summary/Abstract: This work reflects a stage of the author’s research on the anthroponymy system of the contemporary Bulgarian citizens. Applying the methods of inquiry and interview, information has been collected in the course of two years from 400 pregnant women, attending a “School for Mothers-to-Be” in Sofia. A few models have taken shape in the behaviour of the modern Bulgarian woman concerning the ethnological knowledge acquired in the family environment and supplemented by lectures on similar problems. The most frequent motifs for the selection of a personal name on the part of the mothers-to-be have been pointed out as well as the names they like best. The data have been summed up within the frameworks of a few semantic codes, which give us the possibility of interpreting the contemporary value orientations of women in the period of pregnancy and motherhood. They likewise reveal the basic characteristics of the personal name as a symbol and as a meaning.
