Summary/Abstract: On the occasion of the passing away of the acknowledged Slovak actor, director, stage and costume designer, educator, and caricaturist-cartoonist Karol L. Zachar (born at Svaty Anton, January 12,1918, died in Bratislava, December 17,2003 ), the author of the paper summarizes the milestones of his creative period. Up until the end of last theatrical season, the drama company of the Slovak National Theatre had been staging the legendary Janosik musical comedy by Ernest Bryll and Katerzyna Gartnerova Na skle malovane {Painted on Glass, with 643 re-runs). Among other Zachar's renewed pro¬ductions were Vesele panie z Windsoru (The Merry Wives of Windsor) by William Shake¬speare, Tajovsky's Statky-zmatky (The Troubles with Property) or Palarik's Inkognito (Incognito). He was also popular as an actor and his grandness is attributable to his minute characters, which he carved into interesting types, and also his direction was especially enticing by his minute portrayal of the ordinary and good-hearted men. He was always an advocate of a universally understandable theatre, which was straightforward in terms of its form and ideas, an optimistic theatre attentive to minute and well-matched details, which created a harmonious whole.
