Summary/Abstract: This study is based on Marshall Berman’s thesis which defines modernity as an experience and a process. Modernity is a process that has been continuing, up until the contemporary day though specific features have been transformed. These transformations shape an era called late modernity during which the effects of modernity are still visible. However, technological developments have brought out negative repercussions and now modern life is labeled with risks and feelings of insecurity. Accordingly, like the experience of modernity, the experience of late modernity has its own traumatic effects. This study is focused on nostalgic images that are used to take refuge from the traumatic effects of modernity. For this purpose, Serdar Kökçeoğlu’s documentary Mimaroğlu (2020) is chosen to be analyzed since the documentary has a unique point of view in terms of nostalgic aesthetics. During the analysis, modernist approaches that are seen in the Mimaroğlu documentary are revealed. It is concluded that the city symphony aesthetics is adopted and the biographies of İlhan and Güngör Mimaroğlu couple are presented with the images of the modern city. To reveal the nostalgic discourse behind this apparent modernist aesthetics, the editing style of the documentary and the discourses established around late modernity are examined. It is concluded that Güngör Mimaroğlu who lost her husband, yearns for a past that is defined by modern images and the modernist aesthetics adopted by the Mimaroğlu documentary, aims to present a nostalgic feeling. Based on the conclusion that the modernist aesthetics of the Mimaroğlu documentary transforms into nostalgia, it was concluded that in the late modern era; the feeling of home, rural and collective lifestyle, which are the usual images of nostalgia, can transform.
