Summary/Abstract: This article is a polemic over the certainty (or uncertainty) of what a research method is and what is called a method in methodological books used in studies in the discipline of pedagogy. The topic is the result of problems faced by young adepts of science when asking questions, eg “is an interview a method or a technique”? In the literature on the subject, there are various classifications, and therefore terminological differences. Selected textbooks have been presented in terms of their specificity, incl. belonging to a discipline, affiliation of authors and research strategy. As an example of the vagueness of the concept of method, the differences in defining a case study – as a scheme, strategy and research method – are discussed. Definitional problems lie in various perspectives of understanding the method.
