Summary/Abstract: The local universe has endless lyrical resources for the poet. The tendency of regression towards the beginning, the landscape and the topos’ of the rurality, all contribute to obtaining some emotional effects that the vigorous lyrical language of the poet also supports. The evolution of his poetry occurs towards a mystique at first hesitant, then more and more powerful. The poetization of themes from the sacred texts and the deep religiosity of the language make John Alexander: "The High Priest of the holy words", the general meaning of his poetry coming precisely from the ritualization of the tendency to overcome the ephemeral. Ioan Alexandru’s hymn veil comes to light, strongly, in the period 1973-1976 through the volumes Hymns of Joy and Hymns of Transylvania. Regarding the Hymns of Transylvania, the literary critic Mircea Tomuș showed that “everything that is more valuable in Ioan Alexandru's new book is the image of a dramatic Transylvania, on whose face the signs of a sublime beauty stand so natural that deep communication is felt, even conditioning , with the deep wounds of ancestral suffering; a harsh rustic universe, with rolling hills and mountains, an expression of the contained drama, but also of a substance with hard flint, with rough vegetation, bearing as much beauty as bitter essence, populated by a special variety of people, whose high, pure the call is decanted from a toiled and gnarled being; vision is all that can be more opposed to idyll and calophilia; on the deeper steps of an uncompromising realism, with striking notes reminiscent of the courageous existentialist touch, his art tends towards the performances of simplification and essentialization of primitive art in what is more authentic”.
